Lighten Your Emotional Load

In today's Coping Skills Group, we did this powerful exercise. In case you missed the group, you can try it here.

Radical acceptance is a transformative skill from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that empowers us to embrace reality as it is, not as we wish it to be. It’s a tool for reducing unnecessary pain and finding peace in the midst of life’s challenges. Radical Acceptance means fully acknowledging and embracing the reality of a situation, even when it’s uncomfortable, painful, or unfair. It’s about letting go of resistance and judgment, and instead, saying, “This is what it is right now.”

Acceptance doesn’t mean agreement. It doesn’t mean you condone what happened or that you stop working toward change. Rather, it’s about recognizing that fighting reality only intensifies your suffering.

Sometimes resisting reality feels like carrying a heavy backpack filled with things we can’t control. The more we resist, the heavier it gets. Radical acceptance allows us to stop adding unnecessary weight to our lives and choose to set the burden down.

So, in today’s group, we visualized our “backpack”.

Here are the steps:

  1. First pack, in your imaginary backpack, a situation that is weighing on you right now.

  2. Then for each thought, feeling, or resistance tied to this situation, imagine placing a heavy object into your backpack. Maybe it’s anger, denial, or regret.

  3. Add as many objects as you need to represent the weight of your struggle.

  4. Feel the heaviness on your shoulders. Notice how your body feels carrying this burden. Imagine trying to go about your daily life with this weight. How much harder does everything feel?

  5. Now, practice unpacking the things that are unnecessary. Throw some in the trash (especially those that are outside of your control), set some aside if they can be helpful from time to time.

As the backpack becomes lighter, you are better able to walk up hill, to stand up taller; you may be less exhausted from the weight.

As you start your day, you get to choose what you want to pack in your backpack. You can load and unload items in this symbolic backpack throughout the day. Reassess throughout the day.

What unnecessary items are in your backpack? How does it feel to unpack them? Share down below.
