A Simple Practice When Emotions are Swirling. Find Calm Anywhere.

When you’re overwhelmed, your mind may jump rapidly from one worry to the next. A short, reassuring phrase can give your attention somewhere steady to land.

This isn’t about convincing yourself that everything is fine when it isn’t. The most helpful phrases are honest, believable, and calming—words that remind you that you can slow down, stay with the present moment, and get through what’s happening one step at a time.

Try It Now

  1. Choose a phrase that feels supportive.
Try one of these, or create your own:

    • This feeling will pass.

    • I only have to handle this moment.

    • I can take this one step at a time.

    • Right now, I am safe.

    • I can be gentle with myself.

    • Breathe in. Let go.

    • I’ve made it through hard moments before.

  2. Pair the phrase with your breathing.
Repeat the first part as you breathe in and the second part as you breathe out. For example:

    Breathing in: I am here.
Breathing out: I can slow down.

  3. Continue for about two minutes.
Let your breathing stay natural. Keep returning your attention to the words and the sensation of each breath.

  4. Notice what shifts.
You may not feel completely calm, and you don’t need to. Look for a smaller change: a little less tension, a slightly slower breath, or enough space to think about what you need next.

If a phrase feels fake or overly positive, choose a gentler one. This is hard, and I’m getting through it may feel much more grounding than Everything is wonderful.

The goal isn’t to erase what you’re feeling. It’s to give yourself something steady and compassionate to hold on to while the intensity begins to pass.
