đź“– Thought Stopping

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), thought stopping is a powerful technique to interrupt and challenge negative thoughts.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Notice the Thought: Start by recognizing when a negative thought pops up. You might notice it through how you’re feeling or physical sensations like tension.

  2. Interrupt the Thought: Once you spot the thought, use a quick cue to stop it in its tracks! You can imagine a stop sign, or say something like “Stop!” or “Not today!” in your mind (or even aloud!).

  3. Replace the Thought: After stopping it, shift to a more positive or realistic thought. Focus on an idea that feels constructive and supportive. Check out our Reframe Cheat Sheets for ideas!

With practice, thought stopping becomes easier and helps you take control of your thoughts, reducing the power of negativity and building healthier habits.
