Self-Assessment: How in Tune Are You with Your Body?

We did this today in the coping skills class. If you missed it, you can try it now!

Many of you recently asked for more content on the connection between mental and physical health—and we heard you. That’s why we’re so excited to share this simple, powerful tool with you today, straight from our brand-new Health Psychology course (which is now open for you to take anytime!).

Take a moment to reflect on your own relationship with your body. This self-assessment is a starting point—an invitation to notice how attuned you are to your body’s signals, especially when it comes to stress, emotions, and decision-making.

Self-Assessment Instructions

Rate each of the following statements on a scale from 1 (Not at all true) to 5 (Completely true). There are no right or wrong answers—just information to help you grow.

  1. I notice physical sensations like my heartbeat, breath, or muscle tension without needing to focus too hard.

  2. I can tell when I’m feeling emotionally overwhelmed because I sense it in my body (e.g., tight chest, stomach knots).

  3. I often catch myself ignoring discomfort or pushing through pain or fatigue without noticing.

  4. When I feel stress, I’m aware of where it shows up physically.

  5. I trust my body’s signals when making decisions (e.g., feeling uneasy or calm).

  6. I slow down and listen to my body when I need rest or recovery.

  7. I find it easy to describe physical sensations I experience (e.g., heat, pressure, numbness).

  8. I often need someone else to point out that I seem stressed or tired before I notice it myself.

  9. I use movement (stretching, walking, deep breathing) to regulate my emotions or clear my head.

  10. I feel a general sense of connection between my physical state and emotional state.

Reflect:

  • Which statements felt easiest to agree with?

  • Which felt hardest?

  • What might your answers reveal about how you currently relate to your body?

Why This Matters

This isn’t just a feel-good exercise—it’s rooted in science.

Studies show that interoceptive awareness (your ability to notice internal body signals) is directly linked to improved emotion regulation, decision-making, and even resilience. When you become more attuned to your body, you can catch stress earlier, respond more effectively, and care for yourself more deeply.

In other words: tuning in helps you stay grounded, make wiser choices, and recover faster.
