📖 Tackling Ambivalence

This process of weighing pros and cons is about being honest with yourself and acknowledging that change isn’t always easy, but it is possible. Habits, even addictions, form for a reason. They often worked at one time, or maybe still do in some ways. Acknowledging that, and finding alternative ways to get the same need met is crucial to having change stick.

Remember, progress starts with understanding yourself—and every small realization can be a step toward a brighter, more fulfilled future.

Create Two Columns:

  • Column 1: Pros of Making the Change
Write down all the potential benefits you see from making this change. These might include physical, mental, emotional, or social benefits.

    • Example: “I’ll feel more energetic,” “I’ll save money,” or “I’ll sleep better.”

  • Column 2: Cons of Making the Change
Write down any potential drawbacks, fears, or challenges you think you might face if you make this change.

    • Example: “I’ll miss my favorite snacks,” “I’ll have to adjust my routine,” or “I’ll need to find new ways to socialize.”

Now, create a second list, with two more columns:

  • Column 1: Pros of Staying the Same
Note what you gain from keeping things as they are right now.

    • Example: “I don’t have to change my routine,” or “I feel comforted by the current habit.”

  • Column 2: Cons of Staying the Same
Reflect on what might happen if you don’t make this change. Think about any negative consequences you may continue to experience.

    • Example: “I’ll continue to feel tired,” or “I’ll feel guilty after indulging.”

Review Your Lists:

  • Take a moment to read over your lists. Notice which side seems stronger to you. Does one side have more compelling reasons than the other?
